Though Mamma Mia! fans worldwide have long been gunning for a threequel to the 2008 romantic comedy, there is perhaps no more ardent a supporter as star Amanda Seyfried.
“I’m going to keep campaigning for that movie until I’m blue in the face,” she told People recently of her desire to make a follow-up.
Adding of what a potential storyline could look like, Seyfried echoed previous sentiments that a third film could center on her character Sophie’s newfound motherhood.
“Oh, with kids. I mean, I love being a mother,” The Housemaid star said. “I love playing a mother, and I would love to dive into the curiosities of motherhood and raising children on a Greek island — just like [Meryl Streep’s] Donna did with Sophie.”
Seyfried continued, “I think that would be really interesting. I have no idea where the story is going to go, but I know there’s going to be a lot of singing and dancing.”
Most recently, Seyfried also weighed in on audience hopes of Sabrina Carpenter joining the sun-soaked ABBA-inspired world. Before that, the Oscar nominee noted that while “there’s a little bit of fatigue with sequels,” she’d embark on “Mamma Mia! 3 in a heartbeat.”
Musical and film producer Judy Craymer told Deadline earlier this year ahead of the show’s Broadway revival that the third installment is on track and well into development, with Streep returning and a script ready. “Well, we know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen,” she said.
Based on the Tony-nominated jukebox musical, the 2008 original follows Sophie as she prepares for her wedding at her mother’s Grecian island hotel. What Donna doesn’t know is that Sophie has invited three of her former flames (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård) in hopes that one of them is her father and will agree to walk her down the aisle.
The 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, explores a young Donna’s (Lily James) romance with the three men in 1979, when she first arrives on the island of Kalokairi. In the present, Sophie prepares to reopen her recently deceased mother’s hotel, during which her grandmother Ruby (Cher) makes a surprise appearance.
