LARGO, Md. (DC News Now) — With Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks winning the U.S. Senate seat that means a vacancy will be open and many are wondering who will be the next county executive.
Prior to Alsobrooks’s victory, she’s been the County Executive for the past 6 years and recently reelected in 2022.
As she heads to Capitol Hill in January as the first black woman Senator for Maryland, some council members are already expressing interest in the County Executive seat.
According to county law, until someone is chosen the Chief Administrative Officer will become the Acting County Executive.
If Alsobrooks resigns by the first Monday in December, there will be a special election. If she chooses to resign after that, the county council will appoint a council member to finish Alsobrooks’s term.
DC News Now spoke with County Council Chair Jolene Ivey and said she believes she’s right for the role.
“I want to be the county executive because there is nobody better to fill that role. And I know for the good of the county we are going to need someone who is going to focus on the needs of the county and who knows the county,” said Ivey.
Voters said whoever steps into the position, they hope they bring some change.
“I would say definitely like to see programs for entrepreneurs. Better schools, that’s a big thing always to me and I’m a parent, so I definitely want to see better schools for the county,” said voter Antonio Collins.
