A police chase from West University ended in a multi-car crash on Houston’s south side, damaging vehicles and a power pole. What we know so far.
HOUSTON — A police chase that started in West University Place ended in a violent crash on Houston’s south side, leaving behind a trail of destruction and a major police response Monday morning. Authorities are still working to piece together what happened and clear the scene on Del Rio Street.
The crash happened after a pursuit that began around 3:44 a.m., according to police. Officers say West University Place police initially initiated the chase in the West U area before it came to a sudden and destructive end on Del Rio Street.
KHOU 11’s Deevon Rahming reported from the scene that multiple law enforcement agencies responded, including Houston police, Bellaire police, West University police and Precinct 7 constables.
The crash involved several vehicles, including police units and civilian cars.
Investigators say a Bellaire police SUV slammed into a gate and a fire hydrant, leaving it heavily damaged. The suspect’s vehicle is believed to have flipped onto its side, while an HPD SUV also suffered front-end damage.
At least two civilian vehicles were also caught in the crash — one with major damage and another with lighter impact.
The force of the crash also snapped a utility pole in half, which investigators believe may have been caused by the overturned suspect vehicle.
The scene remains very active as crews worked to clear the wreckage.
Officers were seen placing a woman in the back of a patrol car, though it was not immediately clear whether she was involved in the crash or being questioned.
Crews have already begun removing damaged vehicles, including the Bellaire police SUV, and flipping the suspect’s overturned vehicle back upright as they prepare to tow the remaining cars from the scene.
The snapped power pole is expected to require repairs from CenterPoint Energy before the area can fully reopen.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing as they work to determine exactly what led up to the chase and crash.
