Donald Trump and Melania Trump don’t usually let cameras into their date nights — but this time was different.

It also marked one of their rare public appearances together since the January premiere of the “Melania” documentary, where a moment meant to spotlight her didn’t quite unfold the way many expected.

The couple made their first visit to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts together since the premiere, where Trump couldn’t handle playing second fiddle in a moment that wasn’t about him.

Trump, 79, and Melania, 55, returned on March 31 to attend the premiere of the “Chicago” musical at the national cultural center in Washington.

Video shows the pair stepping into the presidential box, rousing the other attendees to shower them with applause. But what stood out to fans was the boos.

Trump, standing above the presidential seal located on the front of the terrace seats, waved to the guests below him. Melania mostly just smiled before giving a light wave too.

Camera footage captured the entire scene, including a very sparse crowd giving the Trumps a standing ovation, along with loud jeers.

The crowd’s mixed reaction to the president and the first lady drew a subtle but telling shift from Melania. She began with a smile and a wave, but as the boos grew louder, she turned to Trump, staring as if to ask if he was hearing it. He remained in place, arms out, soaking in the moment. When he didn’t acknowledge her or the boos, she dropped her smile and quickly took her seat while Trump remained standing as if he didn’t hear the boos.

“Hahahaha,” said one person. While another person said, “I know they hear the boos.”

One X user alleged, “I hear more applause than booing.” However, dozens more posts debunked the narrative that people were intentionally trying to drown out the boos with their fake applause.

“What’s this drowned out crap? I heard the boos all the way till the end,” wrote one viewer. Another said, You know damn well Donald and Melania can hear those BOO’s and those fools keep waving.”

Trump wore his signature suit and tie like he had just come from the White House, while the first lady looked rested in an all-white fringe look. Zeroing in on Melania, one person asked, “Why does Melania always dress in costumes?”

The scene was so chaotic in clips shared online, it was obvious the number of people who chose to stand for Trump and Melania over the larger group that appeared to stay in their seats.

“Notice the people in the balcony above. They are NOT clapping and some quickly sit back down in their seats,” typed one social media user. Another added, “I hear a lot more boos than cheers!”

Trump’s Democratic predecessor, former President Joe Biden, got a favorable mention. Someone expressed, “Damn, even Biden didn’t get booed this much.”

This was not the first time the Trumps experienced being heckled at the same venue. In June 2025, after showing up to watch the opening night performance of “Les Misérables,” the crowd gave a similar lukewarm response to seeing Donald and Melania.

The eception wasn’t any warmer during a solo appearance when his face flashed on the big screen at Maryland’s Northwest Stadium during the Detroit Lions vs. Washington Commanders game. A wave of boos rolled through the crowd, loud enough to drown out the moment in real time.

“No one likes him. And yes, it will always be the Kennedy Center,” tweeted another critic, pushing back on Trump’s controversial decision to stick his name on the 54-year-old building that was originally dedicated to the late 35th POTUS.

His fixation with plastering his name and likeness around the city of Washington, in the vein of ruthless dictators and authoritarians throughout history, has also generated outrage from his detractors.

Once Trump was elected as the Center’s chairman of the board in February 2025, a move was made to rename the institution the Trump-Kennedy Center, but legal challenges claim only the U.S. Congress has the authority to change the memorial’s name.

“It is a Great Honor to be Chairman of The Kennedy Center, especially with this amazing Board of Trustees. We will make The Kennedy Center a very special and exciting place!” Trump promised in a Truth Social statement.

Nonetheless, the Trump takeover created instant fallout that directly affected the cultural hub’s future. Numerous high-profile acts canceled upcoming performances scheduled for the site, causing revenue to plummet.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Center saw a 70 percent drop in year-over-year ticket sales in 2026 compared to the same week in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Those falling numbers could be the real reason Trump is shutting down the famous concert hall for two years starting in July, despite citing renovations as the cause for the closure.
