A Galveston County grand jury indicted Elmore on charges tied to two of the infamous “Texas Killing Fields” deaths.

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas — James Dolphs Elmore Jr. faces charges of manslaughter and felony tampering with evidence in connection with two murders tied to the “Texas Killing Fields,” officials announced.

He was connected to the death of Laura Miller, as well as an additional tampering with evidence charge in the death of Audrey Cook, according to the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office.

What we know about Elmore

Elmore lived at a small home in Bacliff, Texas, just miles from League City.

He had multiple brushes with the law over the last 40 years. Elmore has been arrested in Galveston County and Harris County.

From 1984 to 2025, Elmore was arrested on numerous drug charges, including marijuana possession, and delivery of methamphetamine.

In 1993, he was charged with three counts of attempted murder and was sentenced to one year in the county jail.

Other charges over the years include a 1996 arrest for forgery, a 2016 assault of a family member, and a 2017 burglary charge.

He is 61 years old, making him 19 or 20 years old when Laura Miller disappeared in 1984.

Elmore was friends with Clyde Hedrick, 72, who had long been considered a prime suspect in several Killing Fields murders. Hedrick died earlier this month while on parole before the case could be presented to a grand jury.
