A USPS worker has been arrested after allegedly being filmed shoving a Jewish child to the ground in a shocking and unprovoked attack in New York.
Disturbing surveillance footage captured the moment the young boy walked past the postal van before being knocked to the pavement on Thursday evening in Monsey, Rockland County.
The mail man reached out for the child, who was about half his height, and using both hands, shoved him to the ground before getting into the truck.
The child, who landed on his back, staggered up and recovered his yarmulke that had flown off in the incident.
He then walked away with a friend while the postal worker continued to shout down the street in their direction.
The Town of Ramapo Police Department confirmed in a press release on Friday that they arrested a 39-year-old male from Stony Point for the alleged assault.
“Following a comprehensive investigation, it was determined that a 39-year-old Stony Point man, employed by the United States Postal Service, did intentionally shove a 4-year-old child to the ground while performing his duties,” they said.
“The subject was subsequently located and charged.”
The unnamed man faces charges of endangering the welfare of a child and of attempted assault in the third degree – both misdemeanor offenses.
Police confirmed that following the arrest, the man was released and will be appearing in court at a later date.
According to The Monsey Scoop who first shared the video, the postal worker had also been shouting at children in the neighborhood before the attack.
COMMUNITY OUTRAGED
Monsey has the largest Orthodox Jewish community in the county and local officials have been left shocked and sickened by the brazen attack.
“I have viewed the video depicting an incident involving a physical attack on a small child,” Ramapo Town Supervisor Michael Specht said on X.
“The content of this video is very disturbing. Ramapo Police have treated this matter with extreme seriousness and have now arrested the suspect.”
“The attack on a 4-year-old in Monsey is appalling and deeply troubling, never acceptable under any circumstances,” New York State Assemblyman Aron Wieder added.
Meanwhile, Senator Bill Weber called for the man to “be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” as he said the video left him full of “concern and outrage.”
Nyack mayor Joseph Rand called the footage “absolutely shocking and deeply disturbing” adding that “this should never happen, here or anywhere.”
