An aerial appliance and a high-volume pump were deployed to the scene at Raikes Clough Industrial Estate where the fire service said a pile of scrap metal had been set alight.

Crews from Bolton, Farnworth, Atherton and Bolton North community fire stations were deployed to battle the inferno and remain on the scene this morning.

There have been no reported casualties in the blaze.

Residents have been urged to keep their doors and windows shut as pillars of smoke engulf the surrounding area.

Dramatic pictures from the scene show huge, bright orange flames tearing through the compound.

Fire and smoke can be seen pouring into the sky as nearby residents watch on in horror.

Roads leading to the industrial estate have been closed as firefighters continue to work at the scene with police directing people away from the area.

Greater Manchester Police, the Environment Agency and Bolton Council are all working to assist the fire service.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “At around 2:30am this morning, firefighters were called to reports of a fire on Raikes Clough Lane industrial estate in Bolton.

“Six fire engines from Bolton, Farnworth, Atherton and Bolton North community fire stations, an aerial appliance and a high-volume pump quickly arrived at the scene, where a large pile of scrap metal was well alight.

“Crews have been working hard through the night to bring the fire under control and prevent further spread, surrounding the blaze using handheld jets and a ground monitor. No casualties have been identified.

“Crews remain on scene as they work to make the area safe with assistance from Greater Manchester Police, the Environment Agency and Bolton Council.

“Due to the large amount of smoke, residents are advised to keep doors and windows shut and to avoid the area. Raikes Lane remains closed.”
