Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment today said they have partnered to develop The Popinjay Cavalier, a new stage play by Quentin Tarantino.
The two companies have described the production as a “swashbuckling comedy.”
The official synopsis currently reads: Set in 1830s Europe, The Popinjay Cavalier is a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen. A sweeping celebration of theatre and its heightened romance, told with Tarantino’s signature style and unmistakable wit.
The production is set to open in London’s West End in early 2027.
Sonia Friedman Productions is the outfit behind a string of stage hits, including Paddington: The Musical and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
Tarantino revealed last summer that he was working on a play. At the time, he said: “The play is written. It is absolutely the next thing I’m going to do. We’ll start the ball rolling on it in January… It’s probably going to take up a year and a half to two years of my life.” Last week, we reported that sources tipped the production to hit the stage in January 2027.
Tarantino’s next screen credit will likely be David Fincher’s The Adventures of Cliff Booth, which the veteran filmmaker scripted. There are hopes from industry watchers that it could find its way to the Venice Film Festival, where Fincher and Netflix launched The Killer three years ago.
