Facebook users throughout the US have been taken off of social media due to a major outage affecting the platform.

According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, the outage began just after 4pm ET and had been reported by more than 10,000 people within an hour.

Users have said that the main issue was being unable to access their account due to what Facebook’s parent company Meta was calling a ‘site issue.’

‘Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes,’ one Facebook user reported seeing on the screen while attempting to log in.

The hardest hit areas have been in Detroit, Chicago, and Los Angeles, however, outages have been reported in major cities along the East Coast as well.

The outage appeared to be global, with some social media users claiming they could not access their accounts in multiple countries.

‘Poland here, it doesn’t work. I text with people on Messenger on my phone,’ one person claimed on Downdetector outage page.

‘Greetings from Austria, where Facebook is also down,’ another person wrote.

Other users claiming to be in Canada, Asia and Africa also reportedly login problems on Tuesday.

The majority of problems have come when Facebook users were trying to utilize the site, with 61 percent specifically noting this.

Only 11 percent said the issues were tied to Facebook’s app and some have reportedly been able to successfully enter the platform through their phones.

‘Tells me temporarily unavailable when I try on my laptop, yet my app on iPhone works fine,’ a commenter reported Tuesday evening.

‘Facebook is saying accounts are unavailable,’ another person posted on X. ‘I can’t login to Facebook to complain about it to my friends… Modern day problems’
