Lake Central teen threatened to shoot up school because he was ‘bored’: police
A Lake Central High School student told police Wednesday morning he threatened to shoot up the school, because he was “bored,” St. John police said in a release this week.
Now, he will be facing a juvenile charge of intimidation to commit an act of terrorism in a school.
A male classmate overheard a conversation in the bathroom where the suspect told someone to stay home since “you’re first.”
School officials reviewed the camera footage near the bathrooms.
Lake Central told parents they planned to ask for extra police on Thursday.
Merrillville man charged with child molesting
A Merrillville man faces decades behind bars for child molestation.
Michael Mirin, 68, is charged with seven felonies, including Level 1 child molesting, and dissemination of matter harmful to minors.
He hasn’t been apprehended. When arrested, he is ordered held without bond.
Police wrote that the abuse took place from February 2024 to January 2026.
The victim told police Mirin raped her nearly every day since she was a preteen in Newton County and at least twice in Merrillville.
Mirin said she’d “be in trouble” if she told others.
