After 800 episodes, The Simpsons‘ Nancy Cartwright has little confidence that artificial intelligence could do her job.
The voice actress, who has played Bart Simpson on the long-running Fox animated comedy since its 1989 debut, recently explained why she doesn’t want to be replaced by generative AI when it comes time to retire.
“I think I would choose a successor [instead of AI], and I’ll tell you why — because AI has no heart and I think that’s a missing ingredient,” she told People.
“[AI] might sound pretty close to Nancy Cartwright, but I got passion,” added Cartwright. “We’re spiritual beings, we can emote passion and uplift people and stuff. And I don’t know that a computer can do something like that.”
Following parent company Disney’s $1B deal with OpenAI generative AI app Sora, the Mouse House has been very litigious with other companies peddling pirated AI versions of its vast catalog of copyrighted characters.

Created by Matt Groening in 1987 as series of animated shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, the dysfunctional family got its own Fox animated series, currently in its 37th season after premiering Dec. 17, 1989. The 800th episode, ‘Irrational Treasure’, airs Sunday at 8pm ET/PT.
The Simpsons has been preparing for its milestone 800th episode, as Disney+ has given the show its own dedicated channel, in addition to a new movie debuting in theaters on July 23, 2027.
