Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev hosted U.S. Vice President JD Vance as he arrived in Baku on Tuesday following a visit to neighboring Armenia.

During the meeting, Vance and Aliyev signed a charter on strategic partnership between both governments.

Speaking at a news conference, Vance praised Azerbaijan and Armenia’s efforts towards achieving peace.

In turn, Aliyev said that Azerbaijan and Armenia were “learning to live in peace,” and thanked the United States government “for this great contribution.”

Vance’s visit comes after Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a deal at the White House in August where the leaders put pen to paper on agreements reaffirming their commitment to signing a peace treaty.

The text of the treaty was initiated by foreign ministers, which indicates preliminary approval.

But the leaders have yet to sign the treaty and parliaments have yet to ratify it.

Vance also announced the U.S. would ship new boats to Azerbaijan for the country’s “territorial waters protection.”
