THIS is the harrowing moment an entire petrol station was “swallowed” by a landslide in Egypt.

CCTV footage shows the sudden ground collapse in Cairo that caused a 15-metre deep crater.

In the video, the road can be seen slowly sinking before eventually turning into a gaping cavity.

Several people seen chatting on the edge of the massive hole run for their lives, while a car speeds away in panic.

A cloud of dust sweeps over the empty site where two stores – one selling flowers and one candy – had been standing just moments before.

At least two people were inside one of them when the earth underneath caved in.

Egyptian media reported that some of the victims suffered severe injuries and fractures.

Their overall condition was described as stable after they were transferred to hospital.

Preliminary findings indicate that the collapse, which happened over the weekend, may have been triggered by excavation work at a construction site, which destabilised the ground.

Responding to the incident, local police services and city officials quickly cordoned off the site.

Technical inspection work is continuing at the site to ensure the safety of the facilities next door, and the investigation continues.

This is the second sinkhole incident in Cairo in less than two months, leaving residents terrified of when the next one may occur.

A similar incident happened in New Cairo, east of the Egyptian capital, at the start of December, and is understood to have been caused by a leak from a treated-water pipeline.

Last September, The Sun reported on a nearly 50 metre-deep sinkhole that opened in Bangkok, swallowing parts of a busy street.
