Jacob Elordi recalled how he was rushed to hospital after scalding himself in the shower.

The actor, 28, stars as Heathcliff in the new romantic film Wuthering Heights, which is loosely inspired by Emily Bronte’s 1847 novel of the same name.

And in a new interview with Esquire, Jacob revealed how filming was disrupted after a horrible accident saw him suffer second-degree burns and needing treatment.

Jacob said he nearly tempted fate after the film’s makeup artist, Siãn Miller ‘was designing the scars from the whips for Heathcliff’s back when she joked for him to attempt method acting.

‘If Daniel Day-Lewis was playing Heathcliff, he would have come in with scars,’ she told him.

Jacob told the publication: ‘I said, “Well I’m going to go away and maim myself on the weekend to prove to you that I’m Heathcliff!”

‘That night I went home, and the house I was staying in had a steam shower: a brass knob that steam came from out of the wall.

‘The full story is that, when I was doing “Frankenstein,” I had so much make-up in my fingers and in my feet all the time, and I left it on for the whole shoot because I couldn’t be bothered washing it all off.

‘As Heathcliff, I was covered in mange and dirt, and I though, “I’m not going to do that again, I’m going to clean my feet properly every night and come in to work fresh the next day.”

‘So I went to clean my feet, and I leant back and my back seared into the steam knob and I stood up screaming; it tor up my back. When I went to work on Monday I had a second degree burn.’

The film’s director Emerald Fennell said she received a text with the news: ‘Jacob’s in the hospital.’

She said: ‘Obviously I thought, “Oh my god, he’s had a car accident,” and then he was like, “He’s burnt his back in the shower”.’

While the film doesn’t open until February 13, pre-sales are already strong, hinting at a $30M-$35M domestic opening weekend.

This would make Wuthering Heights the biggest box office opener of Jacob’s career, and his co-star Margot Robbie’s first hit since 2023’s Barbie.

Notably Barbie, in which the actress played the titular role and Emerald had a small part in as Midge, had a $150 million budget for marketing alone.

The March/April issue of Esquire UK is out on 18 February.
