THE family of a Brit found dead at the bottom of a lift shaft on holiday claim the police probe into his death was “flawed”.
Tyler Kerry was discovered in just his socks and boxers at the all-inclusive Trendy Lara hotel near Antalya, Turkey, in November 2024.
The 20-year-old’s grandparents Ray and Collette Kerry, who brought him up and were on holiday with him, believe he may have been murdered.
But Turkish authorities ruled there was no sign of third party involvement in his death.
Essex Area Coroner Michelle Brown today said the case was “complicated” as Tyler died in a country with no reciprocal arrangements with the UK.
She confirmed Turkish solicitors acting for Tyler’s family have been attempting to force a new investigation in an attempt to find any evidence of foul play.
The legal team have appealed the ruling “on the grounds of a flawed investigation”.
Danielle Belton, a family friend, said a Turkish judge has ordered an investigation into how Tyler gained access to the lift shaft.
She said afterwards that she and the family wanted “to be able to close this chapter”.
The inquest heard Tyler was “found deceased in the lift-shaft with some of his clothing removed”.
Ms Brown said some of Tyler’s property was not seized by police at the scene and this raised the issue of “contamination”.
A post-mortem in Turkey found he had a level of alcohol above the drink-drive limit and evidence of cannabis use.
Further testing in the UK recorded his cause of death as multiple injuries and blunt force trauma.
Toxicology was not possible in the UK post-mortem due to the embalming process.
Tyler’s family paid for a private autopsy, which showed he died of traumatic head injuries and a fall from height.
The furniture fitter was just three days into the family holiday when the horror unfolded.
His family previously told how most of the clothes he was wearing were found away from his body – next to his mobile phone and his bloodstained vape.
The coroner adjourned the inquest ahead of a further hearing on March 11.
Danielle said after the hearing that Turkish investigators had “come to the conclusion there’s no third party involvement but said there is a huge list of missing information in the investigation”.
She added: “We recognise we’re never going to get all the answers as we’re dealing with a Turkish system that doesn’t compare with our one.”
