(NewsNation) — The FBI executed a search warrant on an elections office in Fulton County, Georgia, near Atlanta, the agency confirmed.
The main election office in Union City was the target of the search, though the FBI did not elaborate on why they were interested in the facility.
Georgia was one of the states at the center of President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that the 2020 election was stolen. Although the president continues to repeat this claim, there has been no evidence to back up allegations of voter fraud.
Georgia state Sen. Josh McLaurin, a Democrat, said there were reports from other local officials that the search was to recover 2020 election ballots, though those reports are unconfirmed.
A call with then-Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger became part of an impeachment trial against Trump, as he pressured Raffensperger to “find” enough votes for him to carry the state.
As Trump has embarked on his second term, the Department of Justice, led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, and the FBI, led by Director Kash Patel, have launched investigations against the president’s political opponents.
Last week, in reference to the 2020 election, Trump asserted that “people will soon be prosecuted for what they did.” It was not clear what in particular he was referring to.
