TRAFFIC on a major UK motorway has ground to a halt following multiple crashes – sparking rush-hour chaos.
Motorists travelling on the M60 near Cheadle, Greater Manchester, have been warned of queues of up to four miles this morning.
Two lanes were shut for commuters travelling anti-clockwise at around 6.48am.
Traffic was spotted piling up at Junction 3, for Cheadle, as the busy route was reduced to just one lane.
Shortly after, drivers were halted heading clockwise on another stretch of the M60.
Further queues were spotted building at Junction 27 for the Portwood roundabout, with congestion as far back as Junction 24.
Clockwise traffic has since been released, but two lanes remain shut at Junction 3.
National Highways warned drivers delays could add as much as half an hour to commute times.
The service said: “2 Lanes (of 4) are closed on the M60 anti-clockwise at J3 Cheadle due to a collision.
“There is around 4 miles of congestion on approach which is adding about half an hour to normal journey times.”
It comes as the M5 was also forced to close due to flooding in the aftermath of Storm Chandra.
Motorists travelling near Exeter, Devon, have been warned of severe delays this morning after heavy rain battered the region yesterday.
The busy stretch between Junction 28, for Cullompton, and Junction 29, for Exeter, was initially closed after a crash just before 8pm last night.
Emergency crews were scrambled to the southbound carriageway in order to repair the road following the collision.
It remained closed throughout the night as investigations into the smash continued.
But National Highways confirmed the route was still shut this morning – with flooding sparking chaos in the region.
