(NewsNation) — In an exclusive interview, NewsNation spoke with the parents of Pennsylvania teacher Ellen Greenberg as federal investigators launch a probe into her gruesome stabbing death.
Greenberg was found dead Jan. 26, 2011, in the kitchen of her apartment by her fiancé. The 27-year-old had been stabbed 20 times, 10 of which were in the back of her neck and back, specifically including the spinal cord.
Her family maintains she did not take her own life.
NewsNation can confirm the U.S. Attorney’s Office is now investigating the case and has subpoenaed documents. They are specifically looking into the possibility of corruption throughout the investigation, whether that be with Philadelphia police, with the DA’s office or even possibly including Gov. Josh Shapiro, who was the attorney general at the time and looked into the case.
“We’ve only asked for one thing, an unbiased investigation led by an unbiased investigator,” Josh Greenberg, Ellen’s father, told NewsNation.
Sam Goldberg was Greenberg’s ex-fiancé and was the first to discover her body. He has always denied any wrongdoing and has never been charged with a crime.
“We would like to invite Sam and his family members to come forward and explain to us things that have not been answered,” Sandy Greenberg, Ellen’s mother, said.
“I would think he would want to know exactly what happened to his beloved fiancée,” she added.
Philadelphia Medical Examiner Marlon Osbourne ruled Greenberg’s death a homicide initially because of the number of stab wounds she had, but after police challenged his findings, he changed the assessment to suicide.
Osbourne never explained why he changed his assessment at the time, but a new statement showed he made the change after additional information from her case file from the police and consulting with another doctor.
The Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Greenberg’s cause of death a suicide again in October.
A three-part docuseries on streaming platform Hulu highlights her family’s mission for more answers after her death and features interviews from Greenberg’s friends and some experts as to why they believe she was murdered. One of the experts said they believed some of the wounds Greenberg had were inflicted after she died.
