(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump said he plans to impose tariffs on America’s European allies who stand in the way of the U.S. annexing Greenland, the latest move in the president’s push to acquire the Arctic country.
Trump said he would impose 10% tariffs beginning Feb. 1 on eight European countries, including Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
Those countries will face tariffs on all the goods sent to the U.S. The tariff will jump from 10% to 25% on June 1.
Trump warned the tariffs would be in place “until such time as a deal is reached for the complete and total purchase of Greenland,” Trump said, also adding the U.S. is open to negotiating with Denmark on this issue.
The backlash from the countries included on this list has been swift. One Danish lawmaker said the tariffs amounted to bullying, while the French president called them unacceptable. Meanwhile, the prime minister of the UK argued that applying tariffs on NATO partners was completely wrong.
The European Union has called an emergency meeting for Sunday to discuss these new tariffs.
