A BASE jumper has tragically died after falling to his death during a jump from popular spot for adrenaline junkies.
The 28-year-old German man leapt to his death on Sunday during a base jump in Gimmelwald, Switzerland.
He jumped from the notorious Nepal Bridge in the Lauterbrunnen district, before crashing into the rocky terrain below.
A missing person report was filed with the Bern cantonal police after he fell into the terrain.
A police spokeswoman told German media outlet BILD: “We found a person below the jump point”.
“The man could only be recovered dead by the emergency services,” she said.
Authorities say the man had been at the bridge with a colleague.
The friend reportedly jumped first followed by the German man.
For reasons unknown, the 28-year-old lost control during the jump and crashed into the cliff face below the bridge.
The police spokeswoman said: “the investigation into the cause is now underway”.
“The equipment will also be examined,” she said.
According to local police, the Nepal Bridge is a popular launch point for thrill-seekers.
Helicopters from Air-Glaciers and Rega, as well as specialists from the Swiss Alpine Rescue were sent out to assist police.
An investigation by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office remains ongoing.
The investigation is being led by the Attorney General of Switzerland.
Last year a British base jumper died in a similar incident in the Italian Dolomites.
The 33-year-old tourist plunged to his death while wearing a wing suit after he leapt from a cliff edge.
Two other base jumpers, a French man and a German, raised the alarm when he failed to join them at a scheduled landing site.
His body was found around 262 ft from where he had jumped and was flown to a local mortuary.
Drones and a helicopter took more than four hours to find and recover the victim.
