(NewsNation) — A mobster who was imprisoned in the same detention facility as ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro says the infamous unit he’s likely being housed in ia the only place he could go.
“You have to be approved to go to 4 North, and you have to go through screening. So they can’t just put you in 4 North,” Gene Borrello told NewsNation’s Ashleigh Banfield on Monday. “Prosecutors, FBI agents, you have to be approved to go into 4 North. And if there’s a problem where they feel like someone’s there before him that they don’t want him with, he could very well get stuck in solitary confinement.”
Maduro was captured by U.S. forces Saturday at the direction of President Trump and brought to New York, where he is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
The facility’s 4-North unit has held a list of celebrities, including Sean “Diddy Combs,” R. Kelly, Ghislaine Maxwell, Sam Bankman-Fried and Mexican drug kingpin “El Chapo.”
“If he goes to population, which they’ll never put him in population, he has access to things we talked about before, cellphones, anything he wants,” Borrello added.
“When he goes to 4 North, he’ll be limited to that stuff. It’s more strict. Nothing’s coming into that unit. And he’ll be with 20-something people and a bunch of high-profile people,” Borrello said.
Solitary confinement is ‘worst case scenario’ for Maduro: Ex-mobster
Borrello acknowledged that if there’s nowhere for Maduro to stay in 4 North, he’ll most likely be sent to solitary confinement.
“The government has no problem putting you in the hole and keeping you in there,” he said. “They don’t care. That is the worst case scenario. I’ve been in there many months.”
MDC’s solitary confinement conditions are “inhumane,” Borrello said.
“Three showers a week, three meals a day, no sunlight, no yard, one phone call a month. And they don’t care if you’re in trouble or not,” he stated.
As for Maduro’s wife, Cilia Flores, Borrello pointed out that she could also be placed in solitary confinement if they can’t find a spot for her elsewhere.
