(NewsNation) — Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro wasn’t the only person captured by the U.S. on Saturday — his wife was also taken into custody.
Maduro and Cilia Flores are currently in U.S. custody and have arrived in New York, where they will face criminal charges.
“Maduro and his wife will soon face the full might of American justice and stand trial on American soil,” President Trump said. “Now, Maduro will never again be able to threaten an American citizen or anybody from Venezuela.”
The pair is being indicted on narco-terrorism, drugs and weapons charges, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said.
Who is Cilia Flores?
Flores is the First Lady of Venezuela and a former lawyer and politician.
Known as the “First Combatant,” Flores was the first woman to serve as president of the National Assembly in Venezuela. She also served as Attorney General of Venezuela.
Flores met Maduro when she was a part of Hugo Chavez’s legal defense team during the former president’s failed 1992 attempt to overthrow the conservative government.
Flores married Maduro in July 2013.
