(NewsNation) — After President Trump announced Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was captured on Saturday, attention now turns to where Maduro could be held as he awaits trial.
Maduro and his wife are currently in U.S. custody, headed to New York, where they will face criminal charges, a senior government source told NewsNation.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced after Maduro was captured that the pair is being indicted on narco-terrorism, drugs and weapons charges.
“Maduro and his wife will soon face the full might of American justice and stand trial on American soil,” Trump said. “Now, Maduro will never again be able to threaten an American citizen or anybody from Venezuela.”
With Trump saying Maduro is heading to New York, the Venezuelan president could be placed in the same facility where Sean “Diddy” Combs was held both before and throughout the trial: Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
What is Metropolitian Detention Center?
Metropolitan Detention Center is the only federal jail in New York City.
The facility, described as “hell on earth,” has also been home to several high-profile inmates, including R. Kelly, Ghislaine Maxwell and cryptocurrency fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried.
Detainees have long complained about rampant violence, dreadful conditions, severe staffing shortages and the widespread smuggling of drugs and other contraband, some of it facilitated by employees.
In recent years, its conditions have been so stark that some judges have refused to send people there.
MDC Brooklyn has also come under fire for its response to debilitating infrastructure breakdowns and the COVID-19 pandemic.
