(NewsNation) — A suspect was dead following an active shooter situation and standoff Friday at a northern Idaho sheriff’s office that left at least three people, including a deputy, injured, officials said.

The event began unfolding around 2:30 p.m. at the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office in Wallace, Idaho. A male suspect with multiple guns opened fire in the building’s lobby, grazing an officer in the ear, Sheriff William Eddy said at a news conference.

Two women sitting in a vehicle outside the building were struck by gunfire, both in the legs, he said.

“They were sitting in a pickup. The guy shot through the windshield,” the sheriff said.

The gunman was fatally shot in the lobby at 4:15 p.m., after multiple police agencies from the region responded to the scene, Eddy said. He did not provide details, beyond saying it was an officer-involved shooting.

All three shooting victims had minor injuries, the sheriff said.

Information about the shooting suspect was not immediately available.

Police departments that showed up to assist local authorities included the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office in neighboring Montana. SWAT members from Kootenai County, which is adjacent to Shoshone County, also rushed to the scene.

“When you have a person that goes into a lobby of a sheriff’s office and starts a shootout, that’s a pretty significant event,” Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris said.

Wallace, Idaho, the seat of Shoshone County, has a population of about 800 people.
