President Trump on Friday previewed another potential change to the Kennedy Center under his watch, posting photos of marble armrests that he said could be installed at the performing arts center.
“Unlike anything ever done or seen before!” he said.
Trump has overseen an overhaul of the Kennedy Center since taking office in January. He has replaced board members with allies and named himself as chair of the board.
The president unveiled a slate of honorees largely aligned with his tastes, and Trump himself hosted the ceremony this year.
In the most recent move, the board voted to add Trump’s name to the building, dubbing it “The Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.”
Trump officials claimed the vote was unanimous, but Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), an ex-officio member of the board, said that was not the case. Beatty has filed a lawsuit challenging the name change.
“Unless and until this Court intervenes, the effort to corrupt the Kennedy Center into a vanity project for Defendant Trump will continue to harm the institution,” her lawyers wrote.
A week ago, the Kennedy Center’s signage was updated to include Trump’s name.
