CLEVELAND (WJW) – Dr. Howard Tucker, a longtime Cleveland neurologist and the world’s oldest practicing doctor, has died. He was 103.
His grandson confirmed the news to NewsNation affiliate WJW on Tuesday afternoon.
“We’ve lost our patriarch,” his grandson said, in part. “Howard truly defined what it meant to live each day to the fullest. We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of love from friends, family and others whose lives Howard touched over his incredible 103-year life.”
Tucker graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1940 before attending The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was the chief neurologist for the Atlantic Fleet during the Korean War.
Tucker then taught at Columbia University in New York City before coming home to Cleveland, where he became a highly respected educator at the Case Western Reserve University Medical School.
WJW spoke with Tucker back in July, when he said he was grateful for every day and that his biggest accomplishment in life was his 67-year marriage to his wife, Sue.
“His legacy will live on forever,” his grandson concluded.
