(NewsNation) — A former classmate of Nick Reiner finds the allegations that Reiner killed his parents hard to fathom.
Reiner, son of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was reportedly diagnosed with schizophrenia and was being treated by a psychiatrist in the weeks leading up to his parents’ murders.
On Dec. 14, Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were found stabbed to death inside their Brentwood, California, home. Their bodies were reportedly discovered by their daughter in the master bedroom around 3:40 p.m., The Los Angeles Times reported.
On Dec. 16, following an investigation, Nick, 32, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of his parents.
“He had a good sense of humor, a little self-deprecating,” Brett Ferber, who went to prep school with Reiner, told “On Balance” on Monday.
“I’m very, you know, perplexed by the disparity between who I knew, and the stories that I’m seeing. I’m definitely having some trouble wrapping my head around that,” he said.
A report from TMZ last week revealed Reiner was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and in the weeks before his parents’ killings, there was a change in the medications he was taking, which had allegedly made him more “erratic and dangerous.”
Ferber said he did a double-take when he first saw the reports of Reiner allegedly murdering his parents.
“There was no signs of any, you know, thing leading to something even remotely close to this,” he added.
