A Houston man faces multiple charges after a spree of crashes and carjackings left one dead. The suspect, a convicted felon, is due in court Monday.

HOUSTON — A Houston man who allegedly caused a series of crashes and carjackings that left one driver dead and multiple vehicles damaged on Friday is now facing additional charges.

The incident began just after 8 a.m. near Gulf Freeway and Park Place, when a driver struck several cars and fled the scene, killing another driver in the process. The medical examiner will determine the cause of her death. Houston police did not confirm whether she was struck by gunfire.

According to Houston police, the suspect then carjacked two additional drivers at gunpoint before being arrested while attempting a third carjacking on I-59. Police confirmed the suspect abandoned his white SUV, while the victim’s black car remained at the scene.

The suspect, Jason Velasquez, was initially charged with intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and fleeing the scene of an accident involving death.

He is a convicted felon, having been sentenced to five years in prison in 2018 for aggravated robbery, meaning he legally should not have possessed a firearm.

On Sunday, more charges were filed against Velasquez, including four counts of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

No other injuries were reported among drivers, officers, or witnesses.

Velasquez is scheduled to be in court on Monday.
