A OFF-duty police officer was found dead in a river 90 miles from his home after he vanished during a night out with pals, an inquest heard.
PC Rehaan Akhtar, 28, was last seen in the early hours of November 23 when he was celebrating with mates – before he tragically drowned.
His body was pulled out of the waterside in Bristol city centre after a massive search effort.
The PC did not return to the hostel he was staying at following a night out with friends in Bristol on November 22, Avon Coroner’s Court heard.
His corpse was recovered from the city’s harbour on the morning of 24 November and he was later identified by his mum.
South Wales Police said Rehann had been a PCSCO before training as an officer and becoming a “greatly respected” PC.
The force said following his death: “It is with immense sadness that we confirm the news of the passing of our colleague and friend PC 8650 Rehaan Akhtar.
“Rehaan, aged 28, began his journey with South Wales Police as a PCSO in Cardiff in October 2021.
“He went on to train as a Police Officer and joined the local team in Swansea as a Police Constable in September 2023.”
Chief Constable Jeremy Vaughan said: “I was shocked and saddened to learn of Rehaan’s passing.
“At this difficult time, our hearts go out to Rehaan’s family and friends, and we will do all we can to support them.
“During his time with South Wales Police he served our communities with pride and professionalism as both a PCSO and a Police Officer.”
He added: “I know he was greatly respected and liked by his colleagues and those he met as part of his day-to-day duties.
“On behalf of South Wales Police, I offer our heartfelt condolences to all of those impacted by his passing.”
Following a post-mortem examination, authorities opened an inquest into Akhtar’s death and recorded his provisional cause of death as drowning.
The inquest was then adjourned, with a provisional date for its next hearing listed for 24 February.
The alarm was raised when the “talented footballer” from Llanelli, West Wales, did not return home – sparking a search operation.
Police later confirmed a body has now been pulled from the water during their search in the city’s docklands.
Rehaan’s football team Calsonic Kansei Swiss Valley AFC (CKSV), who play in the West Wales Premier League have now paid tribute to him.
The club said: “It is with great sadness that we share the devastating news of the passing of Rehaan Akhtar.
“Rehaan was a committed first team player, a passionate footballer, and a valued presence both on and off the pitch.
“He was a friend to many, known for his positivity, determination, and love for the game.”
They added: “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Rehaan’s family, friends and all who knew him during this difficult time. He will be deeply missed by everyone at CKSV and beyond.”
Rehaan’s former club, Trallwm Tigers FC, also said: “We’re deeply saddened to hear about the passing of former Trallwm FC player Rehaan Akhtar and current player of CKSV AFC.
“Raheen was not only a talented footballer but a kind and humble person. He gave everything on the pitch and brought warmth, positivity, and commitment off it.
“His presence made a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of playing alongside him.
“Our deepest condolences to his family and all who knew him. Very sad times and a such a bright life taken far too soon. RIP Rehaan Akhtar.”
