The horror car smash, which occurred on November 24, involved the 19-year-old’s Vauxhall Corsa on the northbound carriageway in Sunderland.

Cops rushed to the scene in Seaton at around 11pm before pronouncing the passenger, 17, dead at the scene.

The yellow car left the carriageway before crashing and catching fire, Northumbria Police said.

It was travelling between the B1404 at Seaham and the A690 Herrington Interchange – before it left the motorway and then burst into flames.

Local cops are still appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit said: “This is an extremely sad update.

“Our thoughts remain with the families and loved ones of the two young people who have tragically died in this incident.”

They added: “The investigation into the collision remains ongoing and we continue to appeal to anybody who may have information which could assist us to get in touch if they have not already done so.

“Your information, no matter how small or insignificant you feel it may be, could prove vital as we look to ascertain exactly what happened in this incident.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson previously said: “We were called to a road traffic incident on the A19 northbound between Seaham and junction A690 at 23:03 last night (24 November).

“We dispatched two ambulance crews, one specialist paramedic, one clinical team leader, one duty officer, one HART crew (Hazardous Area Response Team) and supported by a doctor at Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS). One patient was taken to RVI hospital for further treatment.”

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service also said after the crash: “We can confirm that last night two fire appliances attended a car on fire after a single-vehicle road traffic collision on the A19 in Sunderland.

“The emergency call was received by our Control Room team at 23:03 and two crews from Farringdon Community Fire Station were dispatched to the northbound carriageway of the A19 at Burdon.

They also said: “Crews extinguished the fire and assisted our Blue Light colleagues from the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) with emergency first aid.

“Our crews left the scene shortly after 00:10.”
