National Highways said the HGV has been “righted” and the traffic trapped in the motorway closure is being let out

Emergency services scrambled to the scene, with National Highways managing traffic.

The two eastbound lanes are closed because of the “extensive barrier damage”.

National Highways said the HGV has been “righted” and the traffic trapped in the motorway closure is being let out.

However the westbound carriageway will stay closed for emergency repairs.

There are currently delays of 15 minutes.

The closure will spell rush hour chaos for commuters this morning.

What diversions are in place?

  • Exit M54 at Junction 2 Westbound take 3rd exit onto A449 Northbound.
  • Continue on A449 Northbound until Gailey roundabout with A5, take 1st exit onto A5 Westbound
  • Continue on A5 Westbound until roundabout with A41, take 1st exit onto A41 Southbound
  • Continue on the A41 Southbound to M54 Junction 3.
  • At M54 Junction 3 take 3rd exit onto M54 Westbound.

The M54 is a major route for those heading to Wolverhampton, Birmingham and north Wales.

If queues worsen, drivers on the M6 could also face delays.

National Highways has told motorists to allow extra time for travel today.

It comes after the M20 was closed yesterday after a driver died in a three-vehicle horror crash that left another seriously injured.

The motorway was shut westbound between Junction 9 and Junction 8 in Kent after emergency services raced to the scene of the crash.

Kent Police said the horror crash happened as a white Mercedes lorry, a black Nissan Qashqai and a white Scania articulated lorry were travelling on the London-bound carriageway of the motorway.

The driver of the Nissan, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene and his next of kin have been informed.

While the driver of the Mercedes was taken by air ambulance to a London hospital for treatment to serious injuries.
