MI5 warning about Chinese spies targeting MPs sparks demands to sanction Beijing

“We have seen that China has gone on to infiltrate MPs offices. We need to be very very careful.

“If China is going to carry on doing this then we need action taken. We cannot allow a foreign state to be spying on us and trying to entrap parliamentarians.

“We need to be fronting them up.”

Last week, Security Minister Dan Jarvis announced a package of measures to tackle espionage threats to the UK.

These included £170m to upgrade encrypted technology for government business.

Mr Jarvis told MPs: “Our intelligence agencies have warned that China is attempting to recruit and cultivate individuals with access to sensitive information about Parliament and the UK government.”
