A MAJOR UK motorway has ground to a halt after a horror multi-car collision left two lanes closed.
Long queues have formed along the M11 between junctions 9 (Newmarket) and 8 (Stansted Airport).
Drivers have been warned built up congestion reaches miles back from the collision with traffic brought to a standstill by the smash.
Both lanes have since been reopened but severe delays on the road are still expected.
Emergency crews are working on site to remove the vehicles involved in the crash.
Staff are sweeping up debris and the wrecked motors have been moved to the hard shoulder.
Drivers are urged to check their route ahead of travel with serious delays on the road expected to continue in the wake of the horrific incident.
A spokesperson for National Highways said: “Traffic has been released & all lanes re-opened on the M11 in Essex southbound between J9 (Newmarket) & J8 (StanstedAirport) following a collision.
“Vehicles have been moved to the hard shoulder and Traffic Officers are now sweeping up the debris, traffic will be released shortly.
“Thank you for your patience.”
Inrix, the traffic data monitoring company, said: “Two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to accident on M11 Southbound from J9 (Saffron Walden) to J8 A120 (Bishops Stortford).”
