A 13-year-old boy who was riding an electric motorcycle was hospitalized after he ran a red light and slammed into a pickup truck in the Inland Empire on Monday afternoon.

Per a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department release, deputies responded to the intersection of Haven Avenue and 19th Street in Rancho Cucamonga around 2 p.m. on reports of a traffic collision.

Upon arriving at the intersection, the deputies learned from witnesses that the boy, who was riding an electric motorcycle described by authorities as “unauthorized,” did not stop at the red light in the intersection.

The pickup truck driver, identified as Brian Kennan, did stop his truck after seeing the juvenile traveling west and failing to stop; however, the boy was unable to brake in time and collided with Kennan’s Dodge Ram pickup.

“The collision ejected the juvenile rider over the truck into the street,” SBSD said in the release.

The boy was taken to a nearby hospital with “several injuries,” although the extent of his wounds was not disclosed.

No injuries were reported for Kennan, 52, a resident of Grass Valley, which is located in Northern California in Nevada County.

Those with more information on the crash are asked to contact the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department: 909-477-2800. To remain anonymous, call We-Tip (1-800-782-7463) or visit www.wetip.com.

San Bernardino County deputies reminded all residents that electric dirt bikes and motorcycles are not intended for use on public roadways. If someone does want to ride their vehicle on the roadway, the dirt bike or motorcycle must be registered and follow the same driving rules as automobiles, since they are classified in the California Vehicle Code.

Additionally, all riders must have a valid motorcycle driver’s license.
