A man with a gun was shot by Los Angeles police late Saturday night, and a car later crashed into the command post that was set up for the investigation.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s Newton Division Gang Unit was near Avalon Boulevard and East 42nd Place in the Historic South-Central neighborhood around 10:50 p.m. when they saw a man armed with a gun preparing to cross Avalon, according to authorities.

“Prior to officers arriving, the suspect had confronted an individual in an alley adjacent to the area and fired at least one round into the air,” LAPD Det. Aguilar told KTLA.

Upon the officers seeing the armed man, an officer-involved shooting occurred, Det. Aguilar added. The man was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital where he is expected to survive.

The individual who was confronted in the alleyway was not shot and is said to be cooperating with police.

A handgun was recovered at the scene and taken as evidence, per LAPD.

Officials had set up a command post for the investigation into the shooting and were looking into it when a car crashed into the command post’s mobile unit, Det. Aguilar said.

While the circumstances into the collision, including exactly what time it occurred, were not immediately known, the driver of the vehicle was seen taking a sobriety test.

There were no immediate reports of injuries to officers or members of the public.

No further information on the shooting or the crash was immediately available.

Alexis Lewis and KTLA photojournalist John Greenwood contributed to this report.
