Brush fire ignites in hills near Burbank

Fire crews are battling a brush fire burning near homes in the hills above Burbank Tuesday afternoon.

The fire was reported around 3:45 p.m. near Amherst Drive and Bethany Road, according to the Burbank Police Department.

By 4:30 p.m., the blaze, named the “Bethany Fire,” was mapped at 8-10 acres and growing.

Evacuation orders are in place for:

  • Walnut Avenue above Bel Aire Drive
  • Above Bel Aire Ballfield (Bel Aire Drive, Vista Ridge, Starlight Circle)

Evacuation warnings are in place for:

  • Irving Drive to Magnolia Boulevard above Kenneth Road
  • 1000 block of Bethany Road

All hiking trails above Burbank, including the Wildwood Canyon and Stough Nature Center areas are closed.

“If you are on or near the hiking trails or in these recreation areas in the Burbank hills, please leave the area immediately,” the police department said. “Officers are in the area to assist.”

An evacuation site is available at McCambridge Recreation Center at 1515 North Glenoaks Blvd.

It’s unclear how the fire started.

Crews from the Burbank fire and police departments, along with Los Angeles Fire Department, have responded to the scene.
