Passengers on a Spirit Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles were forced to evacuate Thursday morning after a bomb threat was reported at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.
Flight 2145, scheduled to depart from Detroit to Los Angeles International Airport, was halted before takeoff when authorities responded to the threat. According to the Wayne County Airport Authority, emergency services, TSA officials and airfield operations teams quickly mobilized, directing the aircraft to a remote area as a precaution.
“All passengers were safely deplaned and transported by bus to the Evans Terminal,” airport officials confirmed. “The incident remains under investigation.”
Spirit Airlines issued a statement saying law enforcement was requested to meet the plane prior to departure due to what was described as a “potential security issue.” Guests were rescreened after leaving the aircraft, which was then thoroughly inspected and cleared by authorities.
“The safety of our Guests and Team Members is our top priority,” the airline said. “We are working to get our Guests to their destination as soon as possible.”
Flight tracking data showed the aircraft eventually took off around 12:45 p.m., several hours after the original scheduled departure. Footage captured by passenger Lavon Green showed airline staff informing travelers of the evacuation and the view of the plane from the tarmac after they exited.
While no explosive device was found and no injuries were reported, the incident remains under active investigation by law enforcement.
