Clint Eastwood is making headlines because of a recent interview.
The German-language outlet Kurier said the Hollywood legend urged filmmakers to come up with original ideas and revealed that he wasn’t interested in the idea of remakes and franchises. He also said he had no plans to retire even though he just turned 95 years old.
However, there’s one major problem with the interview: Eastwood claims it never happened.
The article was published on Friday. Although the outlet has a circulation of about 103,000, it spread wider thanks to major outlets picking it up. Once word got back to the five-time Oscar winner, he set the record straight and issued a statement.
“A couple of items about me have recently shown up in the news,” Eastwood said in a statement obtained by Deadline. “I thought I would set the record straight. I can confirm I’ve turned 95. I can also confirm that I never gave an interview to an Austrian publication called Kurier, or any other writer in recent weeks, and that the interview is entirely phony.”
While there hasn’t been a direct response from Kurier just yet, the article now has a disclaimer saying the site is investigating claims made by the director and said they won’t comment on it until they’re finished.
