Dog badly burned in Eaton Fire looking for special home as recovery continues

After surviving the devastating Eaton Fire with serious injuries, a dog named Riley is continuing his recovery at Pasadena Humane and is now searching for a patient, experienced home to help him heal both physically and emotionally.

Riley arrived at the shelter less than a day after the blaze began, covered in soot and ash and suffering from burns to much of his body, including all four paws, officials said. He also showed signs of smoke inhalation and dehydration.

Rescue dog Riley is shown on Jan. 8 2025 at Pasadena Humane’s ICU following the breakout of the Eaton Fire.

Pasadena Humane’s veterinary team immediately began treatment, providing pain medication, antibiotics and fluids, followed by weeks of intensive care and regular bandage changes.

While Riley’s physical wounds are healing, shelter staff say his emotional recovery has taken longer. Many of his early experiences involved painful treatments, making him sensitive to touch and cautious around new people.

“Once he connects, Riley’s playful, high-energy personality shines through,” officials said. “He loves string cheese, squeaky toys, and is currently learning how to play fetch.”

He’s also good in the car, jumping in easily and resting calmly in the back seat. Trainers and staff have spent weeks helping Riley feel safe, and his personality continues to emerge more each day.

Pasadena Humane is now looking for a special home that meets Riley’s needs and gives him the continued support he deserves. His ideal home will include adults only, a secure outdoor space with fencing at least six feet high, and no other pets, or one dog of similar or larger size.

Adopters must live within an hour of the shelter and be at least 21 years old, they said.

Interested adopters will be required to meet with Riley at least twice before adoption, including consultations with the trainers who have guided his progress. Ongoing post-adoption support will also be provided to ensure his transition to his new life goes smoothly.

To learn more or to meet Riley, you can visit Pasadena Humane during adoption hours, or call 626-792-7151 ext. 971.
