Select DMV offices across L.A. and Orange counties will be open on May 17 for REAL ID appointments,” the state agency announced Friday.
“Even though the federal enforcement deadline has passed, the DMV will continue to offer REAL IDs to Californians who want one,” DMV director Steve Gordon said in a statement. “We’re making it easier for customers to upgrade by offering additional weekend appointments.”
The offices listed below will open on Saturday by appointment only, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Fullerton (909 W. Valencia Drive)
- Glendale (1335 W. Glenoaks Blvd.)
- San Clemente (2727 Via Cascadita)
- Riverside East (6425 Sycamore Canyon Blvd.)
- Thousand Oaks (1810 E. Avenida De Los Arboles)
- West Covina (800 S. Glendora Ave.)
Residents who don’t have a REAL ID can wait to upgrade when their driver’s license is due for renewal. In the meantime, other federally accepted documents, like a valid passport or permanent resident card, can be used to board domestic flights.
To obtain a REAL ID, Californians can start their application online.
Before beginning the application, be prepared to:
- Create a login for a DMV online account if one wasn’t made previously
- Have a Social Security number handy in addition to basic information such as name, address, and date of birth
- Visit a field officer to finish the rest of the driver’s license/ID card application process
The average time to complete the application is nine minutes. The application could be finished later if logged off.
The required documents can be uploaded online, but they must be brought to a local DMV office to complete the application process. Files could be uploaded as files from a computer or as photos from a phone.
