Metrolink will offer free train rides to cyclists on Thursday, May 15, in celebration of Bike Day. Riders who board with a bicycle will not need a ticket — the bike counts as their fare.

“Bikes and public transportation go hand-in-hand,” said Metrolink Board Chair Doug Chaffee. “Bike Day is the perfect opportunity to promote these active and sustainable transit options in tandem.”

Most Metrolink train cars can accommodate up to three bicycles, with bike-designated cars holding nine and Arrow trains, which operate in San Bernardino County, allowing up to 12 per car. Both standard and qualifying electric bikes are permitted.

Passengers with their bikes wait at the Downtown Redlands station on Monday, Oct. 24, 2022, as they prepare to ride the Arrow, the new 9-mile rail service between Redlands and San Bernardino. (Getty Images)

The offer does not apply to Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains under Metrolink’s partnership program, which still require paid fare and bicycle reservations.

Other Southern California transit agencies are also marking the occasion. LA Metro will offer free rides systemwide, Ventura County Transportation Commission is waiving fares for riders with bikes, and Metro Bike Share is offering free 30-minute rentals with promo code 051525.

More details and route information are available at metrolinktrains.com/bike-day.
