It was just last month that Big Bear’s most famous bald eagle couple, Jackie and Shadow, welcomed their new chicks to the world.
But if you look at Sunny and Gizmo now, you wouldn’t be able to tell that they’re less than eight weeks old.
The pair of eaglets visible on cameras maintained by the Friends of Big Bear Valley have grown considerably in recent weeks, thanks in no small part to the frequent fish feedings from their parents.
Now, the eaglets are working on spreading their wings — literally.
According to the Friends of Big Bear Valley, they’ve been getting coached up by Jackie and Shadow, Sunny practiced by “hopping, jumping, and flapping hard” on Friday, even having a little bit of time in the air.
The 1000 Islands Environmental Center says it takes the creatures about 10-14 weeks after birth to take their first flight, so Sunny and Gizmo appear to be on schedule.
