Legoland California announces reopening of Driving School attractions

Legoland California is set to reopen its newly revamped Driving School attractions next month after moving them to a different part of the park to make way for its first-ever indoor roller coaster.

The Driving School and Junior Driving School were first shut down nearly eight months ago for the relocation ahead of the ground-breaking on the new space-themed coaster and its companion land, “LEGO Galaxy.”

While Legoland had not revealed where the rides would be moved when they closed, its parent company informed the Carlsbad Planning Commission earlier in the year they would replace the ‘Fun Town” police and fire academy attractions as part of the “LEGO Galaxy” project.

That work to move the longstanding rides — both of which first made their debut more than two decades ago — is now nearly complete. Kids ages 3 to 12 will once again be able to hit the road to get their very own Legoland driver’s license beginning on May 21, per the theme park.

Outside the change of scenery, the next generation of student drivers in the Driving School will have fresh tracks to enjoy, incorporating roundabouts, intersections and even a car wash equipped with bubbles that rain down on them as the student drivers roll through.

Work remains ongoing for the new “LEGO Galaxy” land and its core ride, the intergalactic coaster housed inside 44-foot-tall, 32,000-square-foot Lego-themed “space port.” According to the park, the land is expected to launch in 2026, although an exact date has not been announced.

When it opens, the roller coaster will be the first added to Legoland California since 2004, when the Coastersaurus opened in Dino Island — now called Dino Valley.
