SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A helicopter nearly landed on a major interstate that runs through San Diego County when its engine failed Sunday afternoon.

It was a close call and traffic was backed up after a helicopter landed on a road that runs along Interstate 15 in northern San Diego County. I-15 begins near the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego County and runs to the northern border with Canada.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers and deputies with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department responded to the emergency helicopter landing at 2:20 p.m. Sunday.

CHP reports the helicopter’s engine failed, forcing the pilot to land on N Centre City Parkway where it meets with Jesmond Dene Road in unincorporated Escondido.
