One person was fatally shot by Chicago Police in the Pullman neighborhood early Thursday after officers responded to a domestic disturbance involving a gun, according to police.

Shortly after 7 a.m., patrol officers in the Calumet District (5th) were called to a home in the 900 block of East 100th Street, police said. Officers entered the home and “encountered an armed male offender and female victim inside a bedroom.”

The female, whose age was not released, was able to escape the bedroom while responding officers tried to de-escalate the situation, police said, but the male suspect turned a gun toward an officer. Police then opened fire, according to the department.

The suspect was taken to UChicago Medicine, where he later died, according to police. A weapon was recovered by police at the scene, police said.

The male’s age and name were not released Thursday morning and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability was on the scene.

Also present were CPD officials, including Chief of Detectives Antoinette Ursitti. The officer who fired their weapon will be placed on 30-day administrative leave, standard protocol after police shootings, officials said.

The shooting occurred in an enclave of Pullman with dozens of two-story brick townhomes decorated with pastel-colored window shutters.

Sandra Brown, who lives nearby, told reporters at the scene that she didn’t hear any gunshots but was awoken by the ensuing swarm of police.

“When I got up this morning and came down, I heard a lot of commotion, police, and so I came down and looked … and (police) were just everywhere,” Brown said
