A man shot and killed his own brother after he was reportedly seen attacking and choking their elderly mother in her Beverly Grove home.
On Friday, Los Angeles police responded to a shooting at a home on the 400 block of North Alfred Street at around 1:25 p.m.
Following a family dispute, the suspect, a 61-year-old man, arrived at the home of his 80-year-old mother while armed with a baseball bat, police said. That’s when he reportedly began attacking the woman.
“When he made entry into the residence, he used it to smash windows, to smash personal belongings owned by his 80-year-old mother and threatened, and may have even struck his mother with the bat,” said Samuel Marullo, a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department.
The elderly woman managed to call her younger son, a 58-year-old man, who was working nearby, for help. He raced to his mother’s home following the call.
“When he arrived, he saw his mother on the floor,” Marullo said. “He saw his [older] brother on top of her, choking her. He fired a warning shot with a shotgun that he brought from his business and his brother continued to choke his mother.”
When the assault did not stop, that’s when he turned the shotgun on his older brother and fired a single shot, killing him.
“The shooter saved his mother‘s life,” Marullo said. “He had no choice, but to kill his own brother. And being choked at the age of 80 while your face is being smashed into the ground? It would have surely caused her death.”
Police said the younger son remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. LAPD confirmed the fatal shooting is not being treated as a criminal case.
“He will be released,” Marullo said of the younger son. “This is a justifiable homicide and not a murder.”
A neighbor who heard the commotion recalled hearing the loud gunfire.
“It was like a shotgun,” said Vincent Scarelli. “It didn’t sound like a pistol. They were big deep sounds and there were two of them. It’s just a tragedy for that family.”
Police said the mother was taken to the hospital with a head injury, but she is expected to survive and will be released soon.
No further details, including the nature of the family dispute or the identities of the people involved, were released as the case remains under investigation.
