President Trump will address Congress Tuesday night against the backdrop of newly levied tariffs on the nation’s closest trading partners, Canada and Mexico.
The tariffs may be short-lived, though, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick saying late Tuesday afternoon that a deal to end them could be announced as soon as Wednesday.
The leaders of both nations had sharp words as the tariffs went into effect, with Canadian Prime Miniser Justin Trudeau calling the action “dumb” and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum saying she’d announce her country’s response on Sunday.
Trump’s speech is expected to start at 9 p.m. EST.
Meanwhile, it is just 10 days before a potential government shutdown, as lawmakers scramble to come up with a deal to keep the lights on.
At the same time, GOP senators are urging Trump to salvage things with Ukraine’s president, after Friday’s fireworks.
