Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of “The View,” called the heated Oval Office meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky one of the “most embarrassing” exchanges she’s ever seen.
“You know, that has to be one of the most embarrassing things I’ve ever seen,” she said in Monday’s broadcast of ABC’s “The View.”
“This is a leader of a sovereign nation, and you are doing theater with him, because you’re trying to show that you’re the hard guy. But I don’t think anybody wanted you to be the hard guy.
Goldberg suggested people who voted for Trump might not have liked what they saw, as the heated exchange was broadcast live on television on Friday.
“I don’t think you asked anybody how they felt, how people who voted for you. You didn’t ask them how they feel about what you’re doing. You didn’t ask them if they want to be operatives of Putin’s government. You haven’t asked that,” she continued.
The firm condemnation comes after Trump lashed out at the Ukrainian leader in his Oval Office on Friday, calling Zelensky “ungrateful” for U.S. support and suggesting he didn’t have “the cards” in negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
On Monday, Trump ordered a pause on U.S. aid going to Ukraine in its war against Russia.
Goldberg reiterated her support for the war-torn democracy, as the live studio audience applauded.
“And I’m sorry, I do stand with you, Zelensky, because you’ve been fighting. Your country’s been fighting, and you’ve been doing it on your own, and you’ve been getting help, but I stand with y’all,” Goldberg said.
“Because nobody should ever be able to come into your country and say, ‘This is my country.’”
