WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Metro Transit police are investigating a shooting that broke out on Tuesday night in Southwest D.C.
The Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD) said just after 9 p.m., officers responded to the Waterfront Metro Station, located at 399 M St., for reports of shots being fired.
There, officers found a woman who had been shot once.
The station was evacuated and then shut down to allow police to investigate.
Preliminarily, investigators believe that before the shooting happened, five people were trying to rob someone on the mezzanine level of the Metro station.
Shots were fired and a bullet ricocheted and hit a woman who was not the intended target of the robbery.
She was taken to the hospital with “what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries,” MTPD told DC News now.
Four people believed to be involved in the robbery and shooting were stopped.
The investigation is still ongoing.
Trains were bypassing the station, and riders were encouraged to take Metrobus Route 74 between Navy Yard and L’Enfant Plaza.
The Waterfront Metro Station has since reopened.
