WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — From lawsuits to strategy sessions, the fight against mass federal firings and layoffs is on from Maryland’s congressional leaders.
Lawmakers met with union leaders to map out a multi-pronged attack. It includes several lawsuits against the Trump administration. They’re pushing back and calling the recent mass firings illegal.
As thousands of federal workers are losing their jobs, Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen is fighting back.
“We are fighting every day, to number one, to make sure that these people who have been wrongfully terminated get their jobs back,” Van Hollen said.
More than 60 lawsuits have been filed against the Trump administration from different organizations and unions.
At a roundtable meeting Tuesday at the U.S. Capitol, Democratic lawmakers discussed with union heads about pending lawsuits and courses of action.
“I’m glad there was a little victory yesterday in the Office of Special Counsel which said that the mass firings of probationary employees, is outside of the civil service law,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.)
AFGE, the largest union for federal workers, also filed a lawsuit last week against the Office of Personnel Management, saying OPM acted unlawfully, falsely claiming performance issues in termination letters.
“I do believe that it is a good case. Okay. Because number one, they just lying,” said AFGE National President Everett Kelley.
While efforts have been made to find fired workers new jobs, many just want their old ones back.
DC News Now asked Kelley if fired workers should try to wait it out.
“I can’t talk in terms of a person’s financial stability. Okay. However, if they can, I ask them to stand together, stand with, the people that’s fighting for them. Because I truly believe in the end, we’re going to win,” Kelley said.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk doubled down Tuesday, saying more federal workers could be fired if they don’t comply with sending OPM an email about what they did last week. It’s another issue the unions are fighting.
